What you will learn?

Calculate the current of an appliance from its power and voltage, and understand why the circuit breaker trips.
Recognize the signs of shock, short circuit, overload and fire risk before they become an accident.
Explain what earthing and the RCD are for, and test the RCD in your board.
Read the distribution board: identify circuit breakers, circuits, the RCD and conductors by color.
Separate what is safe to do yourself from what needs a licensed professional.
Request, compare and evaluate electrical work: scope, materials, warranty and responsible technician.

About this course

You turn on the electric shower (a common Brazilian instant water heater) and the circuit breaker trips. The kitchen socket gets hot. The electrician says he "has to redo everything" and you can't tell if that is true. This course is for that moment.

In 3 hours, split into 6 short lessons, you learn what voltage, current and power are, with examples from your own home. You recognize the four electrical risks at home (shock, short circuit, overload and fire). You learn what earthing (grounding) and the RCD (residual current device) are for, and you read your own distribution board. At the end, you know what is safe to do yourself, what needs a licensed professional, and how to request and evaluate a quote based on NBR 5410.

The content was written by Marcelo Nogueira Souza, an electrical technician and HVAC-R technician. E-Nogueira has carried out installations since 2014, in homes, shops and farms around São João da Boa Vista, São Paulo. Each lesson has a worked example with numbers, a checklist, recall questions and a practical task in your own home. The course closes with a final project: the map of your distribution board, a list of risks and a plan of 3 actions.

This course does not train electricians and does not replace NR-10 training (NR-10 is Brazil's regulation on safety in electrical work). It trains a client who knows what to ask and a beginner who knows where to stop.

Base técnica: Brazilian standards from ABNT (the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards), mainly ABNT NBR 5410:2004 (corrected version 2008) (the Brazilian low-voltage installations standard, derived from IEC 60364) and related ones. The principles hold in any country. If you are outside Brazil, check your local electrical code (the NEC in the US, or the IEC 60364-based code in your country).

Requirements

No prior knowledge of electricity.
Being able to multiply and divide (a phone calculator is enough).
Recommended: access to your own distribution board for the practical activities, always without opening the inner cover.
A phone with a camera to record your practical task deliverables.

FAQ

No. It teaches fundamentals and safety. To be a licensed professional in Brazil you need a technical or engineering course in the electrical field and registration with the professional council for your profession. Outside Brazil, the requirement changes by country: check the local rule. To work for a company, you also need the safety training required by NR-10.
No. The certificate shows that you completed a short course from E-Nogueira Academy. NR-10 training has its own hours, content and requirements set by the standard.
No. The activities use your closed distribution board, a calculator and the labels on your appliances. No activity or practical task asks you to open the board or touch a wire. Some tasks have an optional step with a voltage detector or multimeter, only for people who already have one and know how to use it. If you ever do a yellow task from lesson 5, you will need a voltage tester.
Both. The service entrance part is more useful for houses, shops and farms, where the service entrance is the consumer's responsibility. The rest applies to any property.
You go at your own pace. Each lesson takes 10 to 15 minutes of reading and video, plus the quizzes and the practical task. You can finish in one week, with one lesson a day, and complete the final project over the weekend.
