Loving limits: authority isn't harshness, it's direction

The child slips, the mother explodes, regrets it and promises not to repeat it. What breaks this cycle isn't more effort or more guilt: it's limits agreed beforehand, with love.

Every mother knows this cycle: the child slips, you explode, you say what you shouldn't, you regret it, apologize, promise not to repeat it. And next time, it all happens again.

Module 4 of the Criando Filhos nos Caminhos do Criador course describes exactly this cycle. And the first thing it says is: guilt doesn't educate — awareness transforms.

Authority isn't harshness

"And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord." (Ephesians 6:4, KJV)

The verse asks neither for harshness nor for passivity. It asks for direction. The course sums it up in one line: authority isn't harshness. Authority is direction.

Harshness is reacting in the heat of the moment. Direction is deciding beforehand.

Limits agreed beforehand, not in the heat of the moment

What breaks the cycle isn't trying harder not to explode. It's arriving at the hard moment with the path already agreed:

  • A few clear rules that always apply.
  • The consequence of breaking each rule, said beforehand — not invented on the spot.
  • Your own script for when anger rises: leave the room, breathe, pray, come back.

When the limit has already been agreed, you don't need to shout to be taken seriously. You only need to do what you said.

One practice for this week

Choose a single house rule that keeps being broken. At a calm moment, explain the rule to your child and what happens if it's broken. During the week, do exactly what you said — calmly, without a lecture.

At the end of the week, notice: what changed in you?

To keep going

The course's lesson on Limits is free (in Portuguese) and comes with a 30-day prayer calendar for your child, to print.

Your child doesn't need an extraordinary mother. They need you.
